Delgado Community College

About Delgado Community College

Founded in 1921, Delgado is Louisiana’s oldest and largest community college, serving students throughout a five parish region. Delgado has a long-standing tradition of offering students personal attention, through their accessible and committed faculty and staff. Students’ professional and personal goals are Delgado’s priority, and Delgado works hard to ensure each student’s experience meets and exceeds their expectations.

Delgado’s City Park Campus is centrally located on City Park Avenue and serves the urban area of the city of New Orleans. The campus is the original site of Delgado Community College and remains the largest campus with more than 60 academic programs. Prior to Hurricane Katrina (August 29, 2005), the City Park Campus served approximately 10,000 students. Flooding and wind from the hurricane damaged approximately 70% of the facilities on the campus. Lack of facilities, displaced faculty, staff and students, as well as the devastation suffered throughout the greater New Orleans community forced the College to suspend the fall 2005 semester at this and all other locations.

In January 2006, the College re-opened at all locations (with the exception of the Gretna/West Jefferson One Stop) with limited capabilities.  Eight of the City Park Campus’ 25 buildings are now accommodating returning students.  In January 2007, Delgado enrolled almost 12,000 degree-seeking students—more students than any other college or university in the region.  With many students still displaced by hurricane Katrina, one in twenty-five Delgado students are taking courses online, allowing them to pursue their educational goals from wherever they are at their convenience. Delgado continues its recovery and rebuilding efforts, focusing on enhancing services and program offerings for its constituents and assisting with the community’s return to vibrancy.
